Gap Trading Strategies for Stocks and Futures

Gaps create some of the most predictable price patterns in equity and futures markets. Here's the statistical reality behind gap behavior and how to trade them.

A gap occurs when the opening price of a session is significantly different from the previous session's close. In equities, gaps of 1%+ occur regularly — driven by overnight news, earnings, macro events, or pre-market activity. Gaps are unique because they create unfilled price ranges that the market has a documented tendency to revisit.

Gap Statistics

Research across US equity markets shows approximately 70-80% of gaps eventually fill (price returns to the prior close level), though 'eventually' can mean days, weeks, or months. Small gaps (0.5-1.5%) fill much faster — often within the same session. Large gaps (5%+) on strong fundamental catalysts may take weeks or never fill. The practical trading implication: small gaps are fade candidates; large catalytic gaps should be traded in the direction of the gap.

Gap and Go vs. Gap Fill

Gap and Go: price gaps up, holds above the prior close in the first 15-30 minutes, and continues higher. Trade in the direction of the gap, using the first candle's low as the stop. Best on high-relative-volume gaps with strong catalysts. Gap Fill: price gaps up but immediately shows weakness (selling into the open, first candle closes near the lows). Trade the fade — short as price reverses toward the gap fill. Best on low-catalyst gaps and pre-market-only moves with no news.

The Gap Fade Setup

The classic gap fade: identify a stock with a gap of 1-3%, no fundamental catalyst (just pre-market buying pressure), and relative weakness in the first 5-15 minutes (lower highs, selling into rallies). Enter short on the first break of the opening 5-minute candle low. Stop above the pre-market high. Target: the prior close (full gap fill). This setup has among the highest documented win rates in short-term equity trading when conditions are met.
